Today's Cartoon: North Korea Conducts Underground Nuclear Test

I wonder what compelled North Korea to follow through with its underground nuclear test, despite receiving widespread calls of condemnation from the international community as well as its closest allies, I mean, ally.

It has long been reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il believes that the United States is planning to attack his country and overthrow his regime (right after Hugo Chavez, I guess) and he intends for this underground nuclear test to be viewed as a deterrent for any such invasion.

First of all, I didn't know that the United States was even planning an attack on North Korea, especially since their forces are currently bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan; and secondly, I had no idea that the White House was drawing up plans to invade North Korea, from underground ;) I mean who knows, maybe the time difference makes Kim Jong-il feel a little vulnerable at night, because it means that American soldiers could be up digging while North Koreans are sleeping. Therefore, the only way to ensure that nobody tunnels their way into Pyongyang is by detonating underground nuclear weapons to radiate the soil ;)

While the western media tends to portray Kim Jong-il as an insane dictator, I will give him credit for this... when he says he's going to do something, by golly he actually does it; regardless of the consequences. Albert Einstein once defined "insanity" as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results", which by that definition means the leader of North Korea is the very opposite of "insane". You see, Kim Jong-il does different things over and over again, expecting the same result each time (preservation of his regime).

Now, compare that to someone like George W. Bush, who is still trying to introduce democracy into parts of the Middle East, three years after being flatly refused and you will see that it takes a lot more to be considered "crazy" nowadays than threatening the world with an underground nuclear weapon ;)
