Today's Cartoon: Human Rights Group Protest Madonna Adoption

Remember a couple of years ago, when pet Chihuahuas were the most sought after "accessory" item among female celebrities? Well, it appears that due to the humanitarian efforts of "sex-symbols" Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, African orphans have suddenly become the new status symbol of the rich and famous.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the fact that celebrities are opening their homes, their lives and their busy schedules to these orphaned children; but why do they feel that they have to go all the way to Africa (or Asia) to adopt a baby, when there are still plenty of children that need a home in their own country?

The way I see it, these "adoptions" are much more than just agreeing to care of a child. "Celebrities" seldom do anything in the public eye unless it's in the form of a carefully coordinated "publicity stunt" aimed at either drawing attention to a specific cause or merely to draw attention to themselves (to further their own cause). In other words, Madonna going all the way to Malawi (with a camera crew) to adopt a baby, could very easily be (mis) interpreted as being less about her opening her door to a child in need, than it is about Africa opening its door to a celebrity in need.

So, I guess the only way to be clear as to whether or not a celebrity is serious about their desire to adopt (and care for) an African (or Asian) orphan, it to check on the condition of their Chihauhau... or just see whether or not they still have it around ;)
