Today's Cartoon: President Bush Deploys 6000 National Guard Troops to Mexican Border

Listening to President Bush's speech the other night, I got mixed messages.

It appears that he wants to secure his border with Mexico and deter illegal immigrants from sneaking into the United States, by deploying around 6000 National Guard troops to patrol the border. However, it appears that he ALSO wants to provide amnesty to those who have already snuck into the country.

So basically, the impression that this leaves me with is that the United States will do everything in its power to keep illegal immigrants out... until they finally sneak in. And by providing amnesty to those who are able to sneak in, there will now be even more people who are willing to risk their lives to do just that.

The situation at the US/Mexico border has been set up almost like a game show, where the illegal immigrants are the "contestants" and the border patrol (including the National Guard) are the "obstacles". The rules are quite simple; the contestants navigate their way through an elaborate obstacle course, while also being pursued. If they can survive the course and not get "eliminated" they win.

The prize? Amnesty and $2 an hour picking strawberries.
