Today's Cartoon: Internet Reports Karl Rove Indictment

A line has been drawn in the "cyber-sand" between "internet" and the "mainstream media". At issue is the credibility of a report that former Deputy White House Chief of Staff, Karl Rove HAS ALREADY been indicted on charges of perjury and lying to investigators in connection to the ongoing Valerie Plame/CIA Leak investigation.

While the internet/blogosphere has been obsessed with this story since it broke (online) on Saturday; for it's part, the mainstream media has decided to remain silence on the matter. As a result, the MSM's refusal to discuss, investigate, verify or dismiss this "breaking news" story automatically places it in the realm of "conspiracy theory", regardless of any actual credibility. However, unlike other "conspiracy theories" which lack the "official" status and credibility that comes from being covered by the mainstream media; this story WILL have a definite resolution to it. Over the course of the next 24 "business" hours the world will find out whether or not Karl Rove has actually been indicted.

Now, it would be foolish to stake the reputation of the entire "internet" on this one example, but if this story proves to be "true", then this not only brings into question the effectiveness of the mainstream media to cover "breaking news" but also its ability to determine what's "news" to begin with. On the other hand; if this story proves to be "false", then it's only Jason Leopold's credibility that comes into question.

Really, with those kind of odds working against them, what does the mainstream media have to lose by covering this story?
